Federal Payment Options

Overview:
An IRS Online Account is a taxpayer portal for making payments, pulling transcripts, checking account status, etc.
To set up an IRS Online Account, you will need to verify your ID remotely. You can read more about the process here:
Payments can be scheduled up to 365 days in advance
Cancel payments up to 2-3 business days before the payment is scheduled
Payment Instructions for IRS Online Account
Login to your account.
If filing a joint return, login using the account for the taxpayer listed first on the return
From the top menu bar, select Payments > Payment Options
Select “Make a Payment”
Under “Select Your Payment”, choose the appropriate payment type. The most common choices are:
"Pay [YEAR] Income Tax" for making a tax return payment
"Estimated Tax" for making a quarterly estimate payment
"Amended Return" for making a payment for an amended return
Follow on-screen prompts to complete payment
Once finished, be sure to confirm that payment clears your bank account. Payments typically process within 2-3 business days of the scheduled payment date.

Overview:
IRS Direct Pay is online tax payment portal that does not require a login
Payments can be scheduled up to 365 days in advance
Cancel payments up to 2-3 business days before the payment is scheduled
Payment Instructions:
Select "Make a payment"
Select the "Reason for Payment". Common options include:
"Balance Due" for making the tax return payment
"Estimated Tax" for making a quarterly estimate payment
"Amended Return" for making an amended return payment
Select what to "Apply payment to". Common options include:
"Income Tax - Form 1040" for a tax return payment
"1040ES..." for a quarterly estimate payment
"1040X" for an amended return
Select the appropriate tax year that payment is for

Enter information from a prior year return to verify your ID.
If verification fails, choose a different year to verify and try again. Joint filers may need to use the information of the person listed first on the return.

Once finished, be sure to confirm that payment clears your bank account. Payments typically process within 2-3 business days of the scheduled payment date.

MyFTB Account Overview:
A MyFTB Account is an online portal for making payments, viewing notices, checking payment history, etc.
To set up a login, you can either verify your ID by answering certain questions or having a PIN mailed to you. You can read more about this process here:
Payments can be scheduled up to 1 year in advance
Cancel payments up to 2-3 business days before the scheduled date of withdraw by calling 916-845-0353
How to use a MyFTB Account to make a payment:
Login to your account. If filing a joint return, login using the account for the taxpayer listed first on the return
Click “Make a Payment”
For payment type, select “Estimated Tax Payment (Form 540-ES)”
Select the appropriate tax year
Click “Add an estimated tax payment”
Enter payment information
Follow on-screen prompts to complete remaining information
Once finished, be sure to confirm that payment clears your bank account. Payments typically process within 2-3 business days of the scheduled payment date.

California Web Pay is an online tax payment portal that does not require login
Payments can be scheduled up to 1 year in advance
Cancel payments up to 2 business days before the scheduled date of withdraw by calling 916-845-0353

Click "Use Web Pay personal"
Follow on-screen prompts and enter personal information
Select the appropriate payment type. Common options include:
"Tax Return Payment" for a return balance due
"Estimated Tax Payment (Form 540 - ES)" for a quarterly estimate payment
"Amended Tax Return Payment" for an amended tax return
Select the appropriate tax year
Enter the California payment amount and payment date
Select whether a joint payment
Follow on-screen prompts to complete payment
